Living well with a disability

What is neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity is also a word that is used to describe some conditions, such as, but not limited to:

  • ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
  • OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)

Approximately 1 in every 7 people in the UK are neurodivergent. Being neurodivergent is not a bad thing, it just means that you experience the world in a different way. Each type of neurodivergence comes with great strengths that neurotypical people may not have.

Accessible transport

Until recently, it was often only people who fit the classic stereotype of being neurodivergent that were diagnosed – for example if you think of Sheldon in the Big Bang Theory. This is for many reasons and you can find out more about this on National Autistic Society website.

Now, we understand a lot more about neurodivergence and how that shows up for people of all different ages, backgrounds, genders and lived experiences.

Until recently, women and people marginalised for their gender (such as trans and non-binary people) were rarely diagnosed with ADHD and autism in particular. This is why the news often speaks about the huge numbers of people now looking to get a diagnosis who didn’t realise until recently they were neurodivergent.
