The NHS App
The NHS App is owned and run by the NHS. It is a simple and secure way to use a range of NHS services on your smartphone or tablet.
You can the app at any time, without the need to wait on the phone or visit your GP practice.
The NHS App is available now on iOS and Android. To use it you must be aged 13 and over and registered with a GP surgery in England.
Download the app to your iPhone, Android smartphone, or you can visit the NHS App Online from your computer.
How can I register for the NHS App?
To register for the NHS App you will need:
- an email address (with more than 6 characters)
- a mobile phone or a landline number
- NHS number or your full name
- date of birth
- postcode
To get full access to your medical record, you will also need to share proof of ID (e.g. driving license, passport, European National ID card, UK Residence Card).
If you do not have proof of ID, your GP surgery can help you
Order repeat prescriptions and view your medication
You can order your repeat prescriptions on the NHS App. Once you have selected the repeat medicines that you need, this request will be sent to your GP practice for approval. Shortly after your GP approves this, you can pick up your medication from your pharmacy.
Get messages from your GP practice
You can safely and securely get messages from your GP practice on your app. This also helps you to keep all of the messages from your GP in one place.
To get messages on your NHS App you need to switch on notifications. If you don’t read a message within 24 hours, you will get the same information via text message.
What can I do with the NHS App?
With the NHS App you can:
- Order repeat prescriptions and view your medications
- View your medical record including allergies, test results and clinical letters
- Receive direct messages from your GP rather than by text message
- If you have been referred to a specialist, you can book, view, reschedule and cancel your first appointment
- View any upcoming hospital appointments
- Access health services for someone you care for
- Check your symptoms and view advice on hundreds of conditions and treatments, and get instant advice or medical help near you via NHS portal
Viewing your medical record, test results and documents
You can view your medical record on the NHS app which includes:
- medicines your GP has prescribed
- allergies you have
- vaccinations you've had
- conditions you've been diagnosed with
- notes from appointments at your GP surgery
- results of tests your GP surgery has arranged
- letters that hospitals or specialists have sent to your GP
You may not be able to see some of your earlier records. If you need access to these, contact your GP surgery.
Book your referral appointment
Once you have been referred to a specialist by a GP you can book, view and change your upcoming appointment in the NHS App.
